About your sessions
A few things to know about work that runs on Modal.
Close your browser. Keep working.
Your VM keeps running when you leave. If Codex needs an approval or an answer, it waits in your workspace until you return.
One session, one saved home
Each session has its own VM, files, ChatGPT sign-in, and Codex
conversation. Put projects in /home/dev. Opening one
session leaves the others running.
A fresh VM after 24 hours
A VM runs for up to 24 hours. Open a stopped session and launch a replacement to recover its saved home, login, and conversation. Running tasks and unsaved work do not survive expiry. Check the last result before resuming and keep valuable changes pushed to Git.
Return from any browser
Sign in with the same Modal account and choose the same workspace to find your sessions. Signing out of this page leaves your VMs running. Session names are retained for 90 days after your last visit.
Modal sign-in provides access to your workspace’s compute and storage. ChatGPT sign-in connects Codex inside a VM. Your organization’s workspace administrators can access its resources.
Sign-in did not complete
Enter the device code on OpenAI’s site. If it expired, request a new code. Device-code login may need to be enabled in ChatGPT security settings or by your workspace administrator.
A task stopped updating
Use Refresh in the workspace and check for an approval or question. If a task failed, check your ChatGPT account access and usage limits. Stop an active task before sending another.
